How to troubleshoot Static

The best way to resolve a static problem is to isolate the trouble at the Network Interface Device. If you determine static is present at your Network Interface Device, you simply need to inform D&E so that we can make the necessary repairs.

The NID is a weatherproof unit mounted outdoors where the telephone service wires enter your house or business. Usually the unit is a gray box, approximately 8 inches by 10 inches, marked with TELEPHONE NETWORK INTERFACE on the cover, positioned near the electric meter. Occasionally, the NID is mounted inside the house or business, and may be in the basement.

If your line is static free at the Network Interface Device, start your troubleshooting by disconnecting all telephones (corded and cordless) and any other devices attached to your phone jacks. Other devices may be: answering machine, fax machine, dial-up PC modem, TV satellite box, alarm system and surge suppressors. After all devices are disconnected, reconnect one phone at a time, starting with a corded phone is preferable, and listen if the line is free of static. When you plug in a phone or device and static appears, you have then determined what device may be defective.

If you subscribe to D&E DSL, you may also hear static if a filter is bad or is not installed. To check for a filter problem, turn off the DSL modem, if the static goes away, please provide that information to the D&E Representative so we can provide a replacement.
