Go Green at Work

Four easy ways to make a difference

We’re all trying to be more environmentally conscious these days. But while “green” practices are gaining popularity in homes across the U.S., many businesses have some catching up to do. If you’re looking for simple ways to make a difference, here are a few ideas beyond basic recycling to consider:

Use computers responsibly

Your computer shouldn’t have to run on full power while you’re down the hall in a meeting. By setting your system to go to sleep automatically after it hasn’t been used for a few minutes, you can cut energy use by 70%. (Setting a screen saver isn’t the same - it keeps your computer turned on completely.) Printers, scanners, and other peripherals that are only used occasionally can be unplugged until needed.

When it’s time to buy new computers, remember that your old ones can be donated for refurbishment and recycling. For details, visit www.worldcomputerexchange.org and www.sharetechnology.org.

Reduce paper use

Store everyday work documents electronically whenever possible. You can even post employee manuals and other corporate information to a website or server. Likewise, to reduce your use of sticky notes, try software such as Stickies (found at www.stickiesforwindows.com). Small handheld computers, such as HP’s iPaq or PalmOne’s Zire, are also great choices for taking notes during meetings. When you do need to print, use both sides of the paper. And be sure to recycle your toner and ink cartridges to keep them out of landfills.

Buy green products

Some paper use is a necessary part of doing business. You can minimize the negative impact on the environment by choosing paper made from recycled materials and/or processed using eco-friendly methods. Also try to use refillable pens and markers rather than disposable ones, buy in bulk to reduce shipping and packaging waste, and reuse shipping boxes.

Create a greener kitchen

It’s easy and ultimately cost-effective to provide workers with washable dishes, silverware and glasses, rather than disposable paper or plastic. At the very least, encourage staff to bring their own coffee mugs if you don’t want to purchase enough for everyone.

D&E's Green Efforts

As part of our overall commitment to the environment, D&E Communications has chosen FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) paper for Breakthroughs magazine and our billing envelopes. The FSC certification means the paper is produced through an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable way. Our billing envelopes also include a biodegradable window film that is better for the environment because it breaks down into water, carbon dioxide and organic matter.
