D&E is an active member of the Pennsylvania Telephone Association (PTA), and Haines spoke at the PTA’s Spring Conference in April 2008. His talk was titled, “What Happens When Voice Becomes Data: Securing a VoIP Network.” The topic was a reflection of Haines’ strong concentration in the security arena. “I feel it’s important that telephone companies are fully aware of the increasing number of Internet security threats and, in particular, the vulnerabilities specific to VoIP. These attacks are no longer coming just from hackers looking for notoriety. They’re sophisticated criminal activities motivated by money. Just as you protect an IP network, you need to address security issues within VoIP.”
