In the early 1900s, when telephony was in its infancy, farmers in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, relied on a crude "party line" to communicate. Without means for direct dialing, it was endless source of frustration. One fed-up farmer took matters into his own hands. By laying new telephone lines to connect neighboring farms, he created an entirely new communication network. Thus began the Denver and Ephrata Telephone and Telegraph Company - an "invention born of necessity."
