Any business or organization that owns sensitive data and software needs to consider protecting that data by working with a service that is at a remote location. D&E Communications Inc., with an office in State College, is offering businesses a variety of new services to help them protect their sensitive and vital information. This palette of services falls under the umbrella of "co-location."
"As businesses increase their dependency on data-related services for their day to day operations, there is a corresponding increase in the need for co-location services," said Troy Knecht, business manager, D&E. Co-location services provide companies with safe, secure backup options, allowing them to survive catastrophic events.
"Demand for co-location service has been spurred by the need and desire of companies to insure they have redundant data and communications services in the post 9/11 and Katrina era," Knecht stated. "In addition, as energy and building costs rise, the justification for companies to look for alternative solutions for equipment and data storage becomes easier."
-Share Web hosting, where Web-hosting servers are owned, backed up, and maintained by a company like D&E. In this environment, multiples customers have their Web sites on one common server. They can upload new information by do not have the physical access to the server.
-Dedicated Web hosting allows a company to build a server, or several servers, that are specific to one customer's needs. The server is at a secure site and allows the customer to specify the hardware and the software that is used.
-Co-located hosting provides a customer with a secure, climate-controlled location to house their servers. The customer has constant access to the facility.
-Managed hosting raises the level of service from hosting company including design, maintenance, and technical support. Software and hardware choices are up to the client. The client has remote access to the servers but not physical access.
-Data storage is an important service offered to companies that need to outsource this function. This service allows a company to maintain operations in the event of a temporary disruption. With this type of service, data recovery is fat and reliable. The backup and archiving of data is critical to many organizations.
-Disaster recovery services allow a client to recover hardware, software and data in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. Data and hardware that are deemed critical for operation are replicated and housed in an off-site data center. - PBC
